SYNOPSIS OF THE PLAY: GOODBYE, MY FRIENDS!

This musical play celebrates the primary school career of a class of Year 6 pupils, and comes with a CD of four poignant delightful songs (with vocals and instrumental backing tracks). It is very easy to stage, especially after those tiring SATs tests! It gives the children an enjoyable new focus as they complete their final term in Year 6. No musical ability is needed. The children can simply sing along to the backing tracks. Simple sheet music is provided if you wish to perform the songs with piano, guitar etc. The play is suitable for an extended end-of-year assembly for the whole school, hopefully with parents, lasting about 25-30 mins. It can be easily be shortened, by reducing the amount of children's own input in Scene 3. Some schools extend it further by incorporating it into their leavers' prizegiving assembly. The script is also valuable as a basis for PSHE lessons about making the transition from primary to secondary education and issues such as making friends/ bullying/ facing challenges. The script comes with 8 worksheets to assist this process. Schools have used it successfully in other phases e.g. transition from middle school to high school. If your school is single-sex, a few minor amendments to the script (such as pupil names) will be necessary. There are some intentional "gaps" in the script, for you to customise it to suit you own circumstances.

MUM, DAD, GRANDMA, GRANDPA, TODDLER SITTING AT A BREAKFAST TABLE. CEREAL PACKET and CROCKERY ON THE TABLE. (ENTER NARRATOR)
NARRATOR: Good morning and welcome to our special leavers'assembly. First of all, we take you back to breakfast time this morning in an ordinary family just like yours. (EXIT)

MUM (CALLING UPSTAIRS) Come on, you two! Hurry UP! Your breakfast's ready, and it's nearly time for school.

PAUL (UNSEEN) Bor-ing! Mum! Have you seen my school trousers? I hung it them up last night. (TO GIRL 1, UNSEEN) I bet you've hidden them again……..(THUD)

MARIA (UNSEEN, LOUDLY) I haven't touched them. Mum! He's trying to hit me again!

MUM: (LOUDLY) Stop squabbling! Your trousers are probably on the bedroom floor. That's where you usually hang them!

(Enter GIRL 1 and PAUL, squabbling)

DAD: No more arguing! (To PAUL) It's your last day at Primary school. Look at you, with your shirt hanging out. I thought you were supposed to be all grown up now!

GRANDMA (to GRANDPA) : I can remember when I left my elementary school!

PAUL: Can you, grandma? That was a long time ago! Were schools invented then?

GRANDPA: Don't be rude to grandma! Cheeky scamp! Yes, I remember my last day, too. I couldn't wait to get out! We made up a funny rhyme...what was it?……. Oh yes! I remember!

(GRANDPA and GRANDPA SAY THE RHYME TOGETHER, WITH ACTIONS)

No more school, No more stick
No more stupid arithmetic, No more English,
No more French, No more sitting on the old school bench…..
MARIA: Didn't you like school, grandpa?

GRANDPA: No. The teachers were so strict, and there were 55 of us in a class. We weren't allowed to talk. We were supposed to be seen but not heard! We didn't have TV's, computers or videos. All we had was a scratchy old gramophone and a big old radio in the hall. Schools were different in my day. I hated it. (To MARIA and PAUL) You two are lucky. You love school, don't you?

PAUL: School's not too bad. I'm in the football team. I wonder if I'll get chosen in my new school?

MARIA: School's fine. I'm in the netball team and I'm in the choir. And I see my friends every day.

DAD: You've both done well at your school. (To Paul) How do you feel about leaving, Paul?

PAUL: I'll miss my friends. Some of them won't be going to my new school.

DAD: You'll soon make new friends. I can't believe your eleven years old. You're nearly as tall as me.

MUM: (Hugging Paul): You're not my baby any more! You're so grown up!
